Some families carol, bake cookies, or play with the family elf at Christmastime. Veonne Howell and her family tell stories about a little dog who gets into trouble.

The Howell family's pet mini schnauzer inspired Veonne to create Velvet Learns a Lesson, a Christmas tale that delighted her daughters while stressing the importance of obedience. She wanted to take their minds off of family difficulties so they could enjoy the holiday.

"Our family was going through a difficult Christmas, so I adopted Velvet to cheer us up. She turned out to be mischievous, entertaining, and sometimes downright naughty. Her escapades inspired many bedtime stories in our house," Howell said.

Howell treasures reading with her daughters to foster the parental bond and enhance their imaginations. The quality time they spend reading is important to her, especially around the holidays.

"Christmas is a magical time for children to be happy and dream, despite their circumstances," Howell said.
