KINGSVILLE, Texas

In his eighth collection of poetry "Views from the Saddle: Vol VIII" (published by iUniverse), author Ray A. Twist shows readers what life is like for a cowboy poet.

Raised on his family's truck farm, Twist learned from an early age how to care for cattle and horses and how to pick cotton. He experienced the effects of the Dust Bowl and World War II before operating a cow and calf ranch in Texas. These experiences led him to take personal stances on the environment, ranching, political issues and other topics, from which he drew to write the poems featured in "Views from the Saddle."

"This book is informative about everyday life situations and provides guidance that may help you get along better in your life," Twist says. "My poetry is based on real experiences and stories by real people."

An excerpt from "Views from the Saddle":

"Whatcha gonna do when the oil runs out?
Curse the governor, protest, and hit the street and pout?
Go hug a tree, eat a bean sprout?
Trade that oil guzzler for a pony or a jackass
And pray three times a day that we don't run out of grass (...)"
