Luke Mitchell Jr.'s new posthumously published book "To Bury or to Burn" (published by Trafford Publishing), aims to enlighten and empower individuals concerning optional measures for traditional funerals and burial. Mitchell did not unfortunately live to see his book published. His fiancée, Carol M. Blake, fulfilled his wish by finishing the writing of the book and having it published.

After hearing and witnessing many devoted followers question cremation, Mitchell began to pray and meditate on the topic, hoping the African-American community would embrace the concept of cremation because of its spiritual meaning. His main thoughts centered on the families who were having problems financing traditional funerals; he saw many of these families culturally confined because of traditional beliefs.

"To Bury or to Burn" opens up a discussion regarding traditional burials versus cremation, which, Mitchell states, is considered taboo in many African-American belief systems. Mitchell fully believes cremation should be considered a viable option.

An excerpt from "To Bury or to Burn":

"The 'homegoing service' at New Mount Olive is a family affair, including the church, family, and friends. The immediate family, friends, and church family all come together for the sole purpose of celebrating the life, love, and legacy of the deceased. We still maintain some traditional values such as the wake the night before the homegoing service."
