GENEVA

Agnes Pellier-Galdi spent much of her childhood living under a communist regime in Czechoslovakia. Drawing from her memories of the experiences living behind the Iron Curtain during the Stalin Era, Pellier-Galdi tells a story about oppression and the human desire for freedom in her new novel, "The Squirrel Cage" (published by AuthorHouse UK).

"The Squirrel Cage" is, at heart, a romantic story. It focuses on the everyday experiences of young people living in a dictatorship. For these 20-year-olds, it was difficult to live a normal life, have love affairs or even enjoy the beauty of the city and life in general.

Pellier-Galdi centers this struggle on a young lady involved in the politics of the moment. Although she is not a politician or party member, she tries to make a difference. Her partner, a leading musician in the Czech Philharmonic, finds life in the regime much easier, and their discussions reveal interesting details about the social structure of the time.

An excerpt from "The Squirrel Cage":

"As she walked on, Vera met more and more people hurrying away from the crowd. They must have become fed up too with standing in the sun and preferred to escape from the May 1st Labor Day celebration. Vera watched for some trace of enthusiasm in their eyes but she found only dreary fatigue and an apathy that she had noticed so often lately."
