NAPLES, Fla.

The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is a place filled with strong emotions as doctors and nurses work to save infant lives. Author Sharie C. Lockhart, a certified pediatrician specializing in neonatology, draws from her experiences in the NICU to write her new children's book, "Patty Prepares for her Little Brother: A book created to help families understand the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit" (published by AuthorHouse).

Set within the NICU, "Patty Prepares for her Little Brother" tells the story of young Patty excitedly waiting for the arrival of her sibling. Unfortunately, her brother, Max, makes his appearance earlier than expected as he is born premature. The book tells the story of this NICU experience from Patty's perspective.

"Prematurity is now the leading cause of infant death," Lockhart says. "There is not a book of this kind that focuses on helping the families understand the NICU."

An excerpt from "Patty Prepares for her Little Brother":

"My Daddy came home from the hospital, but my little brother and my Mommy are no where to be found. 'Where is my little brother? Where is Mommy?' I asked. 'Patty,' says Daddy, 'Mommy is resting at the hospital and will be home soon. Your little brother is at the hospital too, and will stay longer because he is small.' I did not understand."
