BURLINGTON, Vt.

The A-ones and the Underdwellers don't mix in the Dome. That's what Tesla had been taught her entire life.

In author Marshall Highet's new teen sci-fi dystopian novel "Spare Parts", disastrous climate change has led to a society in a huge Dome with perpetually pleasant weather. The strict social order dictates that the Underdwellers are beneath the A-ones, incapable of love or loyalty.

When the unconvinced and independent-minded Tesla happens upon an Underdweller named Lynx defending his friend, she realizes in that moment that the truth is far more complex. Tesla saves Lynx from certain death and, in a moment of inspiration and fear, asks him a favor that puts the very Dome itself in danger.

"I wanted to tell a story that teaches readers to question the status quo if it doesn't seem right, whatever it may be," Highet said. "I've loved good sci-fi and dystopian fiction since I was a teen, and I decided to put my expertise as a college English professor to good use."

Highet's "Spare Parts", her first published foray into the realm of science fiction, is also the first in a planned series. It blends real science with empowering characters that appeal to readers of any age.
