During the Vietnam war a multitude of young men were conscripted to fight in some of the bloodiest military campaigns in American history. These courageous young men were expected to fight in the harshest terrain and against men who knew the battlefield intimately. What makes it worse though is the fact that these men were expected to fight without the moral support of their own country. Such are the physical and emotional trauma that all Vietnam Veterans faced. In "Moonscape", author Randall T. Elliott has written a truly eye-opening book that honors the brave young men who fought in Vietnam.

"Moonscape" is the reflections of author Randall T. Elliott who, as a patriotic young officer, volunteered to fight in the infantry during America's war in Vietnam. It is a study in matter of fact, can-do heroism standard in the American military, the author's courage in the face of death or capture during campaigns in Vietnam is nothing short of exemplary. On the other side of the coin, there lies the all too common disillusionment about America's role in Vietnam - the first American war who had its soldiers becoming angst-ridden during active service upon finding out that they were fighting an unpopular war. The pain of being condemned and forsaken by many of one's own countrymen at the height of Vietnam is clearly wrought as Elliot and his comrades' bigger burden.

Randall Elliott numbers among those men who condemn the very nature of war with his soul-searing account of his harrowing experiences in Vietnam - but they are no more than what the multitude of Vietnam veterans or, for that matter, veterans of all wars, endured. The veteran serviceman has written this book as a tribute to all the veterans and their families - it is an engrossing, if not, poignant cry that asks whether the further psychological horror of veterans' being unwelcome back into America could be reversed. Since it has not, "Moonscape" once again reprises how events short-circuited many heroic young men into becoming fatalistic, bitter shadows from America's most unpopular war.
