According to a 2013 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, food allergies among children increased approximately 50 percent between 1997 and 2011 and in the U.S. one in 13 children has a food allergy.

In her new children's picture book, "OK 4 ME 2 EAT: My food allergies" (published by AuthorHouse), author Leslie Berlin teaches important lessons about food allergies and offers tips for staying safe and healthy.

"This book is a beautifully illustrated yet simplistic introduction to food allergies for all young children and their families," Berlin says. "Everyone can learn the basics of food allergies."

"OK 4 ME 2 EAT" tells the story of Sam, a young boy with multiple food allergies who has been lucky enough to outgrow his milk allergy. The book covers eight foods that people are most allergic to (milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, soy and wheat) and shows the importance of being a good friend and supporting those with food allergies. A helpful reference section at the end explains, in easy-to-understand terms, where some allergens may be hidden in unexpected foods.

An excerpt from "OK 4 ME 2 EAT":

"If you know someone who is allergic to certain foods you can be a good friend and help to make sure they don't eat or touch the foods that make them sick."
