As children age and become teenagers, they are faced with many new challenges as they gain maturity. The lessons they learn during this time can help shape how they see the world later in life.

They Called Her Alivia, a young adult fantasy novel by Lena M. Pate, is a story of adventure, imagination, friendship and acceptance, as a young girl finds herself on a magical journey filled with struggles, both political and evil, and more responsibilities than she can handle.

"The novel is filled with adventure, imagination and lessons on moral value as the characters struggle to find their identities and face challenges in teamwork on their journey," Pate said.

As an avid writer, Pate has been published in three anthologies and had a poem highlighted by the Sacramento Poetry Center. She created the blog, lenasstoryandpoetrycorner.blogspot.com, where she writes short stories and poems. Pate uses her artistic experience from writing poetry to create the fantasy worlds and interesting characters seen in They Called Her Alivia.

"I tried to blend the wisdom of botany and the common needs, fears and wants of all children, whatever era they come from, in the novel, to highlight importance stages in maturity," Pate said.
