DELRAY BEACH, Fla., March 3, 2016 /PRNewswire-iReach/ Steven M. Hacker, MD, a leading Palm Beach County dermatologist and author, has released his first novel. "The Caduceus and The Swastika" tells the tale of physicians and medical students who resisted or became part of the Nazi propaganda machine leading up to and during World War II.

"The Caduceus and the Swastika" follows the harrowing flight of three medical students and their professor as the insulated world of academia crumbles under the onslaught of Nazism. Max, Rebecca, and Stats want only to learn medicine, but the Reich has its own plans for their chosen profession, and even darker plans for them.

The story is set at the University of Breslau, at the time a leading medical school, with Nobel laureates and esteemed professors. The erudite, elite academic atmosphere seemingly would have been immune to politicized medicine.

"Obviously this was not the case. Physicians and medical students were opportunists. There is an interesting backstory as physicians went from being caregivers and patient advocates to a critical component of legitimizing Nazi Germany's political machine," Hacker said. "From the perspective of a medical student, a practitioner, and a follower of World War II history, I wanted to educate doctors and the public on this story and reveal how, given the right setting, this sort of situation could easily happen again."

Hacker's research revealed an inadequate examination of a topic that affected thousands of European doctors and students. The result is an in-depth, terrifying and enlightening novel. Many of the physicians who perished under the Nazis were the same dermatologists Hacker studied during his own medical residency.

Historically accurate, "The Caduceus and The Swastika" is a fictional tale that's fast-paced and engaging, reading more like a screenplay than a novel.

This is Hacker's second book. His first was "The Medical Entrepreneur," a top-selling physician practice management book on Amazon.com. "The Caduceus and The Swastika" is published by Nano Press, LLC and is now available online at Amazon.com in paperback for $15.99 and in Kindle format at an introductory price of $1.99.
