Dieter Markworth is convinced that there needs to be a holistic approach to management where all its facets are given equal importance. This is based on his experience working as a Business Change practitioner, as an evaluator for the Australian Business Excellence Awards, as a Senior Corporate Examiner in the worldwide IBM Baldrige Assessment Program and as a consultant. In "Holistic Management," (published by Xlibris AU) he illustrates the best and worst management practices within a Holistic Management System.

Markworth used the Australian Business Excellent Criteria (of which he was a co-author) and the very similar Malcolm Baldrige Criteria of the National Quality Awards of the US, as models of a Holistic Management System. Both contain seven Management Categories that address leadership, planning, information, people, customer focus, processes and business results. Under each of these categories he shows examples of Best Management Practices, and Worst Management Practices. It allows Managers to see how they personally compare against best practice and how the organisation that they are part of compares. This book can also be used as a form of self-assessment for an organisational entity and contains a comprehensive Self-Assessment Methodology for that purpose.

"Unlike most other books on management, the emphasis here is on a holistic approach, rather than concentrating on a specialized subset of management practices," says Markworth. "The book also unleashes the power of personal self-discovery, by providing practical examples of best and worst management practice for the readers to compare themselves to and to assess their own organization against."

Intended for managers at all levels of seniority and experience, "Holistic Management" emphasizes the need to look at the Management Systems that organisations use as a holistic, interrelated and interdependent group of activities, where the neglect of any one aspect of management will invariably result in suboptimal outcomes.
