Saint Paul, Minn.

After 9/11 everything changed for the United States. For the first time since achieving independence we were attacked on our own soil. New York's Trade Center fell and thousands died, as fear settled over the country like a malignant fog. The administration capitalized on that fear to produce a militarized America, and took over the messaging of a complicit mainstream media.

In the post 9/11 era many Americans rethought their priorities. An all-pro defensive back for the Arizona Cardinals, with a family history of service to their country, made a monumental decision. He gave up a multi-million dollar contract and a beautiful new wife to deal with Osama bin Laden, the accused mastermind of the 9/11 assault.

When news of his enlistment reached the Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld, his response to the enlistee was a personal letter of thanks. This new warrior became the most visible soldier in the subsequent war on bin Laden. Unfortunately, for Rumsfeld, the soldier in question was controversial. He had graduated from ASU with honors in 3 ½ years with a major in marketing. This was problematic because he knew about propaganda and recognized when stories were being spun for effect rather than truth. This knowledge, combined with the things he discovered while serving in Iraq, proved to be his fatal flaw.

Inspired by the death of Pat Tillman, the Ultimate Arena, is the story of an American gladiator sacrificed by his own government to protect its self-serving interest.

About the Author

Dan Ireland was born and raised in St. Paul, Minn. He spent over 30 years teaching in the St. Paul public schools and coached football and hockey as well. Like most English teachers, he felt he had at least one book in him. "The Ultimate Arena" is the first of what Dan intends to be many more. He hopes that this book reintroduces the unforgiveable injustices suffered by a fine American family and a reminder of how important the truth has to be in our lives.
