When Cynthia Revels was teaching a credit recovery class for students at risk of failing high school, she found out these students do not like to read what their teacher wanted them to read in literature class because they find it boring. That is when she decided to write a novel that they could easily relate to. Her book titled "Immersion" (published by Archway Publishing) is about two sisters of extraterrestrial origin who must learn to work together to maintain the intergalactic balance between order and chaos.

Ayizan appears to live the life of a normal teenager, but she hides a tremendous secret. She is both human and extraterrestrial. Her older sister Mercedes whom she has never met has been watching Zan from her home planet for over a year now, using her tarot cards. But when Zan's impetuous behavior compromises the safety of other extraterrestrial inhabitants of earth, the older sibling must intervene. Mercedes plots to prevent Zan from completing her "immersion," a rite of passage, controlled by the ancient loa, or spirits of the voodoo culture. As the sisters' complex relationship changes over time, they struggle to find common ground and understand each other while working for the good of the galaxy.

"Even though the novel's primary characters have Afrocentric perspectives of their worlds, this book does not involve slavery, oppression or a dystopian theme," Revels points out. "The message is uplifting and the main characters are involved in lifestyles and adventures that people of all ages can relate to and enjoy."

"Immersion" hopes to make readers realize that it is within the realm of scientific possibility that conscious life continues after everyone cross over to the next life and that they should have more to consider than their personal, racial, ethnic, political and religious differences. Revels would also like them to know that there are many African American speculative fiction authors that people of all ages, ethnicities, sexual and religious persuasions and races can enjoy.
