NAPIER, New Zealand - Inspired by the Maori legends about the Man-God Maui fished up in the North Island of New Zealand, author Colin Phillip Hayvice weaves an unforgettable tale of magic, mystery and adventure in "The Makutu Stone" (published by Xlibris NZ).

This book follows Justin Phillips, an 11-year old Australian boy whose father is a New Zealand Maori chief. His father owns the Makutu Stone, and as custom decrees, he will give it to Justin when he turns 16. After reciting a special Maori prayer, Justin will travel back in time 600 years to learn about his ancestors and the ways of a chief. Against his father's order, Justin tells his two friends about the stone. Talking him into trying out the magic of it, Justin and his friends are transported back 600 years to a New Zealand containing cannibal savages, man-eating monsters and the cannibal Tohunga intent on killing Justin and claiming the stone for himself.

An excerpt from the book:
Sometimes when Justin falls asleep holding the Makutu stone he's taken to another world with warring cannibal savages, Taniwha and Ngarara man-eating beasts and the deadly threat from an evil witchdoctor who wants the stone and Justin's blood!

The stone has the power and magic to transport the chosen one, when he is 16 years old, back to another world 600 years in the past.

Although a work of fiction, "The Makutu Stone" has a ring of truth on it, with all its references to New Zealand and Maori customs and legends. It takes readers into a journey of adventure and imagination.
