Coach House Books announces upcoming events.

Mystery Shopper Sale

There's no such thing as a free meal, people say. Well, those people have never crashed a wedding reception. But also, in more relevant matters, there is such a thing as a free book, and Coach House wants to give you one - at our Mystery Shopper Sale!

Throughout November, if you buy two booksfrom our online store, we'll give you a bonus third mystery book (in the same genre), absolutely free! What mystery book will it be? It could be anything (that Coach House has published)! We'll randomly select a third book for you, our esteemed customer, from our quaint, on-site warehouse. Don't you love surprises? And you e-readers won't be shut out of the free love - buy any two ebooks from the Coach House site, and we'll email you a free third mystery title (in the same genre and format) for free as well. Make an unexpected discovery, be our mystery shopper, and order from the Coach House website this November. (The holidays are coming sooner than you think!)

Governor Generally acclaimed

Did you know that two Coach House authors are among this year's Governor General's Literary Awards nominees? We couldn't be prouder of playwright Nicolas Billon, shortlisted for his play trilogy Fault Lines, and Rhonda Mullins, shortlisted for her translation of Jocelyne Saucier's And the Birds Rained Down.

The winners will be announced November 13 at Canada's National Ballet School in Toronto, and we can barely stand the suspense. His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will also present the 2013 GG Literary Awards on November 28 at Rideau Hall in Ottawa. The finalists and winners off the Governor General's Literary Awards are chosen by peer assessment committees appointed by the Canada Council. Each winner will receive $25,000 - and bragging rights for at least a year. Keep your fingers crossed for the Coach House horses in this GG race!

Edward Keenan's Cross-Toronto Tour

It's a cross-town caper! This November, Edward Keenan, senior editor of The Grid and host ofNewstalk1010 and CIUT radio programs, takes a multi-library tour to the four corners of the city, inviting Torontonians to join a discussion about Toronto's past, present and future. And given recent events in Toronto's municipal politics, we're sure they'll be interesting discussions. Drawing on his book, Some Great Idea, Keenan takes a look at how since amalgamation, and under three very different mayors, Toronto's political life has oscillated wildly and asks, 'Is a city bigger than its mayor?'

Keenan will be making stops in Etobicoke, Scarborough, North York and a special 'downtown elite' lunchtime event at the Reference Library as part of the Toronto Public Library's Thought Exchange program, customizing his talk and the following Q&A to the topics that most concern that region of Toronto. Be there for what's sure to be a dynamic and informative conversation (even involving a very special guest or two!) about the stories we tell ourselves about our city, and where we see our city going in the coming decades.

Still Time to Honour Will Munro

If you missed October's Vaza-Launch for Sarah Liss's Army of Lovers: A Community History of Will Munro, you missed a really good party (and the opportunity to be showered with Baby Duck by Peaches herself). Not only was it one of the rowdiest book launches many have attended, with great performances by Light Fires, Peaches and DJ John Caffery, but the event raised $4000 for theWill Munro Fund for Queer and Trans People Living with Cancer. But there are still great opportunities this November to celebrate Will Munro's legacy. (You can even do it at home by enjoying and contributing to this Will Munro timeline!)

On Thursday, November 7, Army of Lovers author Sarah Liss will talk at theArt Gallery of Mississauga (300 City Centre Drive). In Munro's hometown of Mississauga, she'll talk about Munro's art, in conjunction with the currentFibre'd Up! exhibition running at the gallery. Then on Thursday, November 28, at the Yorkville Library (218 Yorkville Avenue) in Toronto, Liss will talk about Army of Lovers and the effect Munro had on Toronto's gay nightlife. Both events are totally free, so if you knew Will or want to know more about his life, don't miss out on these two talks.

The Bride of Indie Lit Night

Do you live in the Kitchener-Waterloo region? Well, listen up! Since 2007, a few of Canada's independent presses have been traveling to Waterloo to pair with The Starlight Social Club(47 King Street North) and Words Worth Books(96 King Street South) to bring the latest and greatest in indie literature to K-W. And thisMonday, November 4, we're making our return. Acclaimed indies Coach House Books, ECW Pressand House of Anansi are teaming up bring you (among other things) Depression-era child magicians, poetry that tackles the world of social media, life among Jehovah's witnesses, gay activist/party-throwers and hot, heart-wrenching infidelity, among other tales.

The night will feature seven short readings - a tasting menu of sorts for K-W book lovers - followed by book signings and informal conversation with the authors and presses. Not only will we offer a tremendous lineup of readers, but the evening will be hosted by the newly minted comedic/vaudevillian duo ofJules McKools and sometime Words Worth and Starlight staffer Caroline Wesley. They'll give our seven authors the zingiest, zestiest introductions of all time. We hope you can join us! A Pretty Sight

'This is a stellar book of poems, pun intended, and it's no surprise .... Dave O'Meara has been a judge for the Griffin Prize. How long before he's a nominee?' - Ottawa Citizen

The City Still Breathing

'Matthew Heiti's fantastic debut novel The City Still Breathing concerns identity - not just that of the aforementioned corpse, but those of each of the lives that comes into contact with it over the course of one cold, grey storm of a winter day in Sudbury ... Heiti manages to be at once visceral and immediate yet symbolic ... and while the story is well plotted and tightly paced, it's just as rewarding for the things the author doesn't give away.' - National Post

Need Machine

'Working in a variety of registers and forms, he is able to press our existential buttons without forgetting to entertain .... Smart, fun, serious and satisfying: if it's not already, put Need Machine on your to-read list.' - Broken Pencil
