What was life like at the height of the Roman Empire? In her debut work of fiction, author Cecily Paul explores this question as she opens a threshold into the ancient realm and dissects the social and cultural dynamics within.

"Age of Gold" (published by Xlibris UK) chronicles the story of a master and his steward who both fall in love with the same girl. However, she is not what she seems. All three must make wrenching changes to their beliefs and values before their relationships can be resolved. The book takes readers into the depths of ancient Rome with its stunning and vivid descriptions of the glory of the historic empire. It conveys a detailed knowledge of life and thought at the time, and reflects on the nature of slavery in an era that accepts human ownership as natural and inevitable. It also sheds insight on the stark differences between the roles of men and women.

Suffused with believable dialogues, minutely researched details and unforgettable characters - not modern men dressed in togas but real Romans in thought and attitude, "Age of Gold" makes for the perfect classic read. It weaves elements of entertainment and historical knowledge to create a fictional triumph that promotes a clear understanding of life during one of the greatest periods in the history of human civilization.
