This world's wonders are often hidden among the secluded and not-so-often visited places such as the North Pole. Due to the place's remoteness, inhospitable climate and unpredictable traveling, few people are privileged to visit and enjoy the breathtaking flora and fauna of a natural paradise. Now, through author Carolyn Drake's "Cold, Cold North" (published by Trafford Publishing), all parents can introduce their children to the magnificent and fascinating world of the Arctic.

Drake's idea for the book originated one evening after dreaming up stories for a not-yet-2-year old child who asked for more and more. It was the Arctic story he wanted repeated, and months later, requested when he saw Grandmom. Inspired, she started to turn that dream into reality in order to tell a story and introduce the wondrous Arctic not only to one, but also to the world.

"Cold, Cold North," the product of that dream, is a child's picture book about Arctic wildlife told with informative verses about a variety of animals that are a living part of the Arctic landscape. While introducing each child to the uniqueness of the far North, the words with the meaningful crayon illustrations draw the child into the reading in a way that encourages questioning, comparing, participating and expressing animal feelings. There are surprises and uncommonly used words, but the book motivates the child to interact with the reading or recreate what they read/see after the reading. "Cold, Cold North" is a picture book that will become a household classic as readers read it again and again.

About the Author
Carolyn A. Drake has a keen interest in the Arctic and Inuit culture. The spark that drew her attention to the far North came at a young age. While sitting around the dining room table with family, she heard neighbor friends share their Arctic adventures. And from those spoken words, distant lands came alive. Decades of reading, hiking, traveling and photographing have encouraged her to continue learning about other cultures and share her adventures with others. Even though she has written nonfiction articles of interest, this is her first published book. Drake lives in Traverse City, Mich. with her professor husband, Stephen, and she is on the staff at the Dennos Museum Center.
