Author and history buff Ruby Gwin's new book tells the true story of one man's distinguished military career, chronicling his personal journey and experiences across three wars, the political and historic developments during the Cold War's hottest years and the riveting air combat operations he participated in. This is the story of "Colonel (Ret.) Harry G. Canham" (published by Trafford Publishing), a man who dared to do his duty.

The narrative spans the beginning of his duty in 1942, at the height of the Second World War, up to his retirement and return to civilian life in 1974, after the Vietnam War. Gwin charts the evolution of air power from when it was under the ground forces' auspices as the United States Army Air Corps to the time it became the United States Air Force, a fully-fledged branch pivotal to the nation's military operations ever since its establishment.

Readers will see the sacrifices Canham made, the decades spent away from the comfort of home and the dangerous missions to protect America. Gwin frames this within the big picture, showing air power's place in the sheer scale of the Allies' worldwide operations against fascism. Canham's courage is displayed in what Gwin could disclose of his top secret missions, juxtaposing his combat roles with the process of establishing peace. The book contains photographs of, and information on, the aircraft he piloted, from prop-driven transports to warbirds, bombers and Vietnam icons like the AC-130 gunship and the F-4 Phantom fighter, displaying the technological and doctrinal development of strategic bombing and its refinement, which would lead to the precision airstrikes used today.

Gwin depicts an Illinois boy's transformation to a man who earned numerous decorations while being humble, neither courting attention nor flinching from assignments. Gwin also shows the tremendous risks he and his colleagues faced, the ever-growing sophistication of their enemies and their weapons, from flak barrages to the MiG interceptors and surface-to-air missiles employed in Vietnam. Canham was not unscathed, his injury from Vietnam is shown, underscoring his perseverance to continue serving and flying in 86 more missions.

"Harry's military journey is unique of a modest pilot who wished not to tell of his accomplishments but just a pilot doing his duty." Gwin says.
