Bunyon Keys Reveals Blounts Creek, North Carolina's Heritage in New Release

BLOUNTS CREEK, N.C. - Bunyon Keys remembers the stories his grandfather, Orlando Keys, told him when he was young, tales of their family's history going back to the late 1690s. These are also the stories and histories of the African-American populace in the Blounts Creek area. Keys' new book allows readers to look back at these families from a genealogical perspective, revealing "Over Three Hundred Years of Black People in Blounts Creek, Beaufort County, North Carolina" (published by Xlibris). Keys' original book was off the market for approximately one year and is back in publication as Revision 1. These revisions will also be included in the second book.

Keys offers readers insights about the folks in the Blounts Creek area. He elaborates upon their family structures from the late 1690s up to the present time, showing how they changed over the many years. He also explains that in the early history of North Carolina, there was a law that permitted first cousins to marry each other. There was also a law that prohibited free people from marrying slaves, though free Blacks could, and in some cases did, own slaves and, in some cases, as common-law spouses.

These were but some of the era's societal realities, which shaped the culture of the people and influenced their development. Keys shares more information and plans a follow up to, noting that there might have been some families left out in his account, or that information on other groups may be incomplete. He hopes that with additional research, these families might be included in the second book. He also states that it is not his intent to "offend anyone if some information contained herein seems to be derogatory toward their families."

Bunyon Keys was born on February 23, 1943, and was raised in Blounts Creek. He graduated high school in 1961 and joined the Air Force. He married Dorothy Florence in 1965 and returned to Blounts Creek in June 1989.
