In "Degree of Guilt" (published by iUniverse), author Barbara Harken's new romantic suspense novel, readers join Maggie Witkowski as she tries to clear her grandfather's name at the risk of her own safety.

"When it comes to protecting family," says Harken, "Maggie is like a dog with a bone - a very hungry dog. Good thing. The town - and one nasty sociopath - have it in for her."

All Maggie wants to do after a horrifying year in Chicago is to enjoy the inheritance her grandparents left her - the lakeside cabin in northern Wisconsin where she spent her childhood. With most of the cabin's heirlooms sold by her mother, she is left with nothing but her memories and, worse yet, a multitude of problems.

It seems the townsfolk who doted on her while she was a child have branded her grandfather a murderer. If that is not bad enough, a ghost suddenly makes his appearance. Dead since 1963, Larry Denison is helplessly attached to the Witkowski cabin. A rascal during his life, he must now perform a good deed before he can gain entrance to a happy eternity. Unfortunately, Maggie, whom he sees as a pain in his side, is his only way out.

"Will Maggie be able to clear her grandfather's name? Will Larry make it to heaven? Enjoy the humor, suspense, and excitement as the answers unfold," says Harken.
