Students discover Japanese cultural and religious traditions and the artistry of puppet performance in this heartfelt tale, based on the Newbery Award-winning book by Elizabeth Coatsworth. This musical adaptation incorporates traditional Japanese instruments like the shamisen and koto into an original jazz score and uses the intricate techniques of bunraku and shadow puppetry to tell the story of an artist and his loyal cat in ancient Japan.
