Just over two months ago, Donald W. King, the Artistic Director of The Providence Black Repertory Company, (Black Rep) informed the community that the company was suspending its theater season.

During the last 60 days, Black Rep's Staff and Board of Directors have worked to raise money and develop creative strategies to reinstate their theater season.

On Thursday January 8th, King announced in a press release "that both theater productions have been reinstated".

King continued, "Some adjustments have been made---for example, Gem of the Ocean will have a shortened run---but the important news is that the show must, and will, go on! While Black Rep is excited and proud of this announcement, we are not out of the woods yet. We are still working hard to procure the necessary funding to support our theater season, other programming, and general operating expenses".

Remaining events for the 2008-2009 theater season are as follows:

A Time of Fire by Charles Mulekwa, directed by Donald W. King (February 5-March 8)

Gem of the Ocean by August Wilson, directed by Donald W. King (April 9-April 26)

First Look Reading Series (January 12th, March 23rd, May 4th)

On Monday, January 12th at 7:00 p.m. Black Rep will host the First Look Reading Series, which is a  chance to "catch a sneak peak at a new work for the American stage - and be part of the development process."  The play will be Blacktop Sky by Christina Anderson, a playwright recently selected by American Theater magazine as one of fifteen up-and-coming artists "whose work will be transforming America's stages for decades to come."
