"Tongue of a Bird is the perfect show to kick off our inaugural Next Rep Black Box Festival," says Artistic Director, Jim Petosa. "It embodies everything that we're seeking to present: adventurous, intimate work that allows audiences to connect with the play on a much more personal level."

"We're very fortunate to be working with actor and playwright Ellen McLaughlin," says Managing Director, Harriet Sheets. "Her original Broadway performance in Tony Kushner's Angels in America as well as her written theatrical work speaks to her commitment to the art, and New Rep is pleased to present her play, Tongue of a Bird, this season."

A story of lost mothers and daughters, TONGUE OF A BIRD follows Maxine, an emotionally wounded young search and rescue pilot, who returns to her childhood home in the Adirondacks to search for Charlotte, a missing 12-year- old girl. During the search, Maxine reconnects with her Polish refugee grandmother, and through her dreams, is forced to confront her memories of her mother, who committed suicide, abandoning her.
