According to vineyardartsproject.org, director and playwright James Lapine (Into The Woods), composer Tom Kitt (Next to Normal) and lyricist Michael Korie (Grey Gardens) return with their latest musical, FLYING OVER SUNSET, which explores three characters, Claire Booth Luce, Aldous Huxley, Cary Grant, and their respective journeys with fame and LSD in 1950s Los Angeles.

FLYING OVER SUNSET will feature star-studded cast, Marin Mazzie, Boyd Gaines, Tam Mutu, Betsy Wolfe, Jennifer Simard, Matt McGrath, Colin Critchley, David Pittu, and Anna Eilnsfeld.

Synopsis:

Los Angeles, the mid-1950s. The unregulated drug LSD is being prescribed by the psychiatric community of Beverly Hills as a therapeutic tool for some of their most celebrated clients. They include:

  • Iconic American film star, Cary Grant, who is retiring from motion pictures for the third time, still riddled with doubts about his identity.
  • Clare Booth Luce, screenwriter, would-be politician, and playwright of The Women, who is profoundly tortured by the death of her daughter.
  • Aldous Huxley, distinguished author of Brave New World, resettled in Los Angeles where he is now going progressively blind.

Together in the new musical Flying Over Sunset, they embark on a journey of self-awareness as they come together in an LSD salon hosted by the ever-ambitious Clare Booth Luce. Their "trip" is at times hilarious, magical, sexual, profound, scary - and true, based as it is on factual accounts of the era.

The show will play Friday, July 29, 2016 from 7:00pm to 10:00pm at the Vineyard Arts Project in Edgartown, MA.
