Classic Albums Live Performs 'Abbey Road' at Boston's Colonial Theatre Tonight

Classic Albums Live will perform Abbey Road at The Colonial Theatre tonight, September 6 at 8pm. Remember when you used to listen to an entire album? Classic Albums Live does. For the first time in popular music, the greatest albums from the 60s and 70s are recreated live on stage, note for note and cut for cut.

Just the name Abbey Road makes you think of another time, a time when music mattered. These days new music doesn't survive. It's gone by lunch. Abbey Roadsaw the Beatles let go. It was their swan song album. They wanted to make something that would last and end their legacy with grace and cool.

No other album picks up a full head of steam like Abbey Road. Despite their splitting up, the lads beckon us to "Come Together" right from the onset. And they crescendo and say goodbye with kiss of philosophy that not only stands the test of time, but tattoos itself onto our hearts: "And in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love you make."

When Classic Albums Live performs Abbey Road, they go deeper than just playing it note for note and cut for cut. They've had that part down for years. They go into the album and fuse their DNA with it. There's a beauty that needs to accompany every performance of Abbey Road. Classic Albums Live has found that beauty and takes the greatest pride in sharing it with everyone at the show.

"This has never been done before," says series producer, Craig Martin. "There's a real thirst to hear these albums performed start to finish. For many of us this is the music we grew up with - the soundtrack of our lives."

"All of our focus is put into the music," says Martin. "We perform the works of the Beatles, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin the same way an orchestra performs the works of Mozart. We don't bother with the imitation or impersonation. The bands are big - upwards of eleven pieces. We research these albums and go to great lengths to reproduce each and every sound live. We never use tape or computers. We'll bring in a children's choir, a sitar player, a string quartet, whatever it takes to get it right."

Each album calls for a new group of musicians. "That's the real challenge," says Martin, "Finding the right musicians for the right album. So far, we've been bang-on with every performance." Members of Nelly Furtado, Moist, Jesse Cook, Honeymoon Suite, David Usher and the Headstones have all taken part in the performances.

The Colonial Theatre, founded in 1903, and Berkshire Theatre Festival, founded in 1928, are two of the oldest cultural organizations in the Berkshires. Having united in November of 2010 under the leadership of Artistic Director and CEO Kate Maguire, these two institutions are providing the Berkshires and beyond with the finest in live theatre, music, dance and the visual arts on five stages in Stockbridge, MA and Pittsfield, MA.
