"...if you took the W in answer, the H in ghost, the extra A in aardvark, and the T in listen you could keep saying "WHAT?" but no one would hear you because the whole word would be silent!" - Olive Ostrovsky, from Rachel Sheinkin's "25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" - Olive

In the case of the show I went to....there was an onstage audience member who was a large man, totally bald

Mrs. P: John is recovering from a recent case of headlice
(John walks over to Mrs. P and scratches head right over her)
John: What?

Katurian, that sounds hysterical!

Spell cow.
Can I have a definition
It's a Cow
Can you use it in a sentance
Please spell cow.

I like my hair really it is pleasent to the touch

Oh yea, well if you switch the first two vowels of William it becomes william...
yea but if you switch the next to vowels it becomes Will Aim
that is so.....retarded!

...that I read as a girl on the toilet..

Jesus, Will you care if I lose?
No. But I won't care if you win either. I don't care about things like this.

...As easy as the recipie for making jello...

I have tons more...If I post them I'll end up retyping the entire show here.

Some of my favorite audience participant bashing quotes are...

Mr. Greene is the result of Mrs. Blue and Mr. Yellow

Mr."make up a name here" has to go through a thurough search of his hair before entering any plane, train, bus, subway,or Manhattan Island.

Mr. Panic gets confused when his spelling coaches say Panic, Calm down, Panic, calm down.

Ah, I should have specified, mine was the Melbourne (Australia) production...and that's so weird, we have cows here! Wonder why they changed it?

Excuse me I marked off this area with invisble tape.

How-a I don't know-a

Leaf Coneybear has cats

The first person had her Bat Mitzfa
and the second person had to attend the Bat Mitzfa

(if you haven't already noticed, I have a thing for Leaf.)

I really liked one of the fake pieces of information that they used on me when I was chosen as an audience speller:

"Miss (insert my name here) is a child prodigy who is currently writing an opera in brail."

I'm not a gay stereotype. I'm a coincidence.

There was one - it closed March 11th re: Favorite Spelling Bee quotes?

Oh, a personal favourite, about one of the audience members:

"Miss *can't remember name*, like myself, is a natural blonde."

(That got about a five minute laugh and the poor girl almost died on stage - our Rona was a very well-known brunette in a tacky blonde wig re: Favorite Spelling Bee quotes?)

the names of leaf's siblings are great. I love when one of the audience participants stand up when their not supposed to and one of the cast members pushes him down.

another favorite joke on an audience member...

so and so exclaimed before coming him "Ma! I can wear jeans I'm just going to a spelling bee, not a Broadway show."

Ha ha, I remember standing up when Leaf was announcing the names of his siblings. I remember that the person playing Marcy Park grabbed my arm to stand up when he said the name "Raisin" That was prettty funny.

I too love the peanut flashback, I was laughing so hard.

"Leaf Coneybear has Cats!" or adults only: "Leaf Coneybear wrote cats!"
"I fell."
"Yeah, well if you switch the first two vowels in William you get... William."
"Oh my gosh your Asian!" (adults only)

I was going to say that! When at the end they talk about their later lives and Leaf gets up and they're just like "Leaf Coneybear... has cats." its hilarious.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson is number five on my list of fave male bway stars :re: Favorite Spelling Bee quotes?:re: Favorite Spelling Bee quotes?

more faves:

"because my dads are my dads and alright enough already" (it rolls off the tongue so well!)

"....It simply sits. I make a part. I'm not taht smart." (and then he sings w/ his finger puppet!!!!)

never mind i'm done, the whole show is too full of good quotes.

I don't remember any exact quotes, but I like:

When Logainne says something about how the spelling bee is plummeting as fast as George Bush's approval ratings.

When Olive corrects William, saying an Olive is a vegetable.

Pretty is what changes. What the eye arranges is what is beautiful.
