20 Million People- "My Favorite Year"

"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert

Lil Abner has an excellent opening number. It starts off simple and has a big company finish!

"Comedy Tonight" from FORUM. (And a lesson on how turn a flp into a hit by changing the opening number.)

The opening tap routine in 42ND STREET.

The Carousel Waltz sequence in CAROUSEL.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

The best opening number is musical comedy, clearly....has to be....."It's Today" from "Mame." It sets the tone and style for the entire show!

It comes right after Agnes sings "St. Bridgette" to little Patrick. They are all alone in the dark city of NYC. The moment she's finished singing, it goes right into a burst of jazz as the curtain rises onto Mame's elegant Beekman Place townhouse!

A brilliant, brilliant opening number!

There is nothing to say except HEAD DESK!!!!!!!!!!!

"Hairspray" "Good Morning Baltimore"
"Saturday Night Fever" "Stayin Alive"
"Hello, Dolly!" - "I Put My Hand In" (theatre) and "Just Leave Everything to Me" (film)

"I've lost everything! Luis, Marty, my baby with Chris, Chris himself, James. All I ever wanted was love." --Sheridan Crane "Passions" ------- "Housework is like bad sex. Every time I do it, I swear I'll never do it again til the next time company comes."--"Lulu" from "Can't Stop The Music" ----- "When the right doors didn't open for him, he went through the wrong ones" - "Sweet Bird of Youth" ------------ --------- "Passions" is uncancelled! "There's No Business Like Show Business"? - Annie Get Your Gun...there's a reason that song is so famous.

Now/Later/Soon from A Little Night Music, though it is not typical, is by far one of my most favorite opening numbers.

The Prologue from City of Angels is also a fabulous opening number.

I also think All That Jazz is quite good as well.

As much as I didn't really like "Titanic", I thought the opening was incredible. The opening for "Ragtime" is also amazing.

Arghh! Grammar pet peeve #1: your vs you're. "Your" is a possessive pronoun. "You're" is the contraction of "you are." <<

Definitely "All That Jazz," and if not "Opening Night," "The King of Broadway."

MacConnachy Square is hardly the opening number of Brigadoon. It follows "One in the Highlands" and the title song.

I think "Comedy Tonight" is certainly one of the best opening numbers.

I really enjoy all of Ahrens and Flaherty's opening numbers:

"Oh The Thinks You Can Think" - SEUSSICAL
"Twenty Million People" - MY FAVORITE YEAR
"A Man of No Importance" - A MAN OF NO IMPORTANCE
"Ragtime" - RAGTIME
"We Dance" - ONCE ON THIS ISLAND

-- I think they're all fantastic

I agree with the opening of TITANIC -- I think it's beautiful

"We are What We Are" - LA CAGE AUX FOLLES
