I wonder if Stereophonic can snag a nom for Orchestrations. I hadn’t really considered it until seeing its eligibility determination.

I’m still unclear where MARY JANE is being considered.
Best Play?  Best Revival of a Play?

Guettenberg and Appropriate eventually had specific mentions when they were being considered Revivals.  While the Drama League and Outer Critics Circle have nominated it in the best revival category, I felt fairly certain it would be considered as such for the Tony’s considering their interpretations of the rules this year. However, I see no announcement stating it will be considered in the revival category and Im not I’m entirely sure how those 2 previously mentioned shows are revivals and Mary Jane is not?

It doesn’t really reflect the roles, but of course that’s nothing new when it comes to awards categorization. Rose and Pill seemed unlikely to make either category, while Harper is arguably safer in Lead than in Featured. I think he’d have made the latter category, but he’d be going up against a bunch of great performances that would have the advantage of being in significantly better received shows. Lead is more open, with four strong performances but only Strong and Odom being in shows people feel passionate about. He likely wasn’t gonna win Featured and Carell was unlikely to be nominated anyway, so it’s a decent strategic move.

Or maybe there was no strategic thinking going on here and the committee just decided the actor who walked away with this production should be in lead.

Wonder if we'll be seeing two WJH nominations in the same category for the Drama Desks (Primary Trust and Vanya)

I’m hoping this doesn’t screw over Ben Cook.

Geesh! I don’t know what to think anymore!  I hope that given the rave reviews that the show got they would lead to some Illinoise love and give them both wonderful actors/dancers the nomination.  But with this crowded field I’m sure one or both will be screwed over.  It would be a nail biter come Tuesday.  Still no consensus on who will be nominated for Best Actress in a Musical.  The only locks II see for a nomination are Jonathan Groff, Sarah Paulson, Rachel McAdams, and Jessica Lange and maybe Daniel Radcliffe (though I’m hoping I’m not jinxing him!)  Truly an interesting and exciting year.

I think it’s possible both Ubeda and Cook make the category. It’s a hard one to narrow down, but I’m gonna hold on to at least Ubeda for now. Radcliffe and Skybell are the only contenders who I feel confident in there.

I agree with your locks, but maybe I’m being generous when I say there’s several other performances I’d really be shocked to see miss. Specifically Jeremy Strong, Leslie Odom Jr., Kara Young, Kelli O’Hara, Brian d’Arcy James, and Lindsay Mendez. I know Radcliffe has an infamous history of Tony snubs, but I think he’s safe this time. He’s in too big of a show giving too acclaimed a performance for me to entertain him missing again.

''I know Radcliffe has an infamous history of Tony snubs''

It all comes down to the tastes of the nominators. The Outer Critics Circle and the Drama Desk nominated Radcliffe for ''How to Succeed.'' The Tonys did not. The Drama Desk also nominated Radcliffe for ''Equus'' and ''The Cripple of Inishmaan.'' The Tonys did not. Here's hoping the fourth time is the charm for Radcliffe for ''Merrily'' at the Tonys.

Again, anything can happen, which is why there are inevitably surprises and ''snubs.'' The Outer Critics nominated Kelli O'Hara and Brian d'Arcy James for its nongendered Outstanding Leading Performer in a Broadway Musical. But the day before, the Drama League nominated O'Hara, but not James. Go figure!
