Just wanted to post my thoughts on the show's I saw during my recent trip.

Friday, April 7th, 8pm

Come From Away:

This was the last show I bought because I was in between a few shows.  It was probably one of my favorites.  I was most pleasantly surprised by this show.  Just makes you feel good.  Very engaging.  Go see it.

Saturday, April 8th, 2pm

Sunset Boulevard

I was lucky enough to see Glenn Close 23 years ago when I was in my teens.  It was the show that started my obessesion with theatre.  I have to say I really enjoyed it.  Did I miss the set?  I did.  But Glenn's performance was extraordinary. She has made it much more human.  I enjoyed the over the top performance from the past but this new interpretation really got to me.  I was crying through the big numbers remembering how fast life goes.  I was 16 when I first saw it.  It was very emotional.  It's worth the price of admission.

Saturday, April 8th, 8pm

Miss Saigon

I probably haven't seen this show in about 19 years.  I really love the music. Performances were very good.  I must admit I held it higher in my memory than I should.  I liked it but wasn't engrossed as I was when I was younger.  Still worth seeing.

Sunday, April 9th, 3pm

War Paint

Go see this for the leading ladies.  Ebersole and Lupone are incredible.  The show itself was ok.  I wasn't engrossed in it.  But just hearing those voices of these ladies is worth going to see it.

Sunday, April 9th, 7pm

Cats

I hadn't seen Cats in about 30 years.  I remember I didn't like it.  I thought it was boring.  I wanted to see it again as an adult.  I went in with low expectations.  I have to say I liked it a lot more than I thought I would.  Did I love it?  No.  The dancing is out of this world.  And Memory is a classic show tune.  I was bored in some parts but overall a good production.

Monday, April 10th, 8pm

Charlie and the Chocalate Factory

I was worried going in to this show with what people were saying about it on the blogs of this website.  I have to say that I am with the grand majority that didn't love it.  Where are the sets???  They could have done so much more with it.  The songs were just ok.  Christian Borle is great as always.  Still I felt short changed.  They could have done so much more with this show.  I have to say it was the show I liked the least of all my shows.

Tuesday, April 11th, 7pm

Dear Evan Hansen

Where do I begin?   I cried about 5 times during this show.  Ben Platt has to be seen to be believed.  Put his name on the tony now, because it his to lose.  I was worried because Ben missed his first performance the Sunday before I saw it and I really wanted to see him. I have to say the reviews don't do him justice.  He is giving a star making performance.  Rachel Bay Jones broke my heart as well.  The songs where my favorite of any new show I saw.  I just loved it.  My favorite show of this trip.  Sell a kidney if you have to in order to buy a ticket.   GO SEE IT!!!!

Wednesday, April 12th, 2pm

Groundhog Day

I enjoyed it.  Did I love it?  No.  But it was pretty good. Andy Karl as always is giving a fine comedic performance.  He is on stage the entire time and I don't believe get's a moment's rest.  It kept my attention and had some really good moments.

Wednesday, April 12th, 8pm

Sunday in the Park with George

I had never seen a production on stage.  Only seen the taped version with Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters.  I loved it.  That music and those lyrics are simply sumptuous.  Jake Gyllenhall has some pipes.  He can sing!!!  I was very impressed. And Annaleigh Ashford is a delight.  I think I have a little crush on her.  So adorable.  The cast is first rate.  I sat all the way in the balcony and had a perfect view.  Worthy of going to see.  Definitely.

Thursday, April 13th, 2pm

Cagney

I thought it would be better than it was.  The dancing is fantastic.  Robert Creighton is very good.  The show itself I found underwhelming.  Had some slow parts but in the end I found out some very interesting facts that I never knew before.

Thursday, April 13th, 8pm

Hello, Dolly!

What can I say that hasn't been said before?  I had a grin from ear to ear the entire time.  My cheeks hurt by the end of it.  It is the true definition of a classic musical done in a classic sense.  Bette!!!  There are no words.  She is worth the price of the ticket.  (It was the most expensive ticket I bought by the way.)  She has the audience in the palm of her hand.  She receives applause for walking across the stage.  And she totally deserves it.  The rest of the cast is incredible.  The entire production is perfection.  Do not miss this show!!!  It will be one of your theater highlights for the rest of your life.

That's it.  Overall a very good show trip.  I wish I could have seen more.  I counted.  There are still 17 productions on Broadway that I haven't seen.

Wow you must have a good bit of money to box off 11 shows in a week on broadway!

While I am all for discussions of rising ticket prices and the inaccessibility of Broadway to most people, this comment seems crass to me.

For those of us who must travel in order to enjoy the NY theatre scene, packing as many shows as possible into one trip is actually the most economical approach.

That's the way to do Broadway right! What terrific memories you'll have of this trip.

That's awesome!! I'm going to be doing 11 in 7 when I'm visiting over the summer, so it's nice to hear that I'm not the only one who does this.

That's an impressive list of shows and definitely required a lot of planning! Glad you had a good time.

This is definitely the case for me. I'm lucky to be able to visit the city once a year and tend to see 6-7 shows. A lot of planning goes into it and yes it is expensive but totally the most economical way to see as many as possible in a short period (especially when you factor in the weak CDN dollar). 11 shows is impressive. I'm doing 7 next week and have been looking forward to the trip since I came home last year. Glad to hear you had a good time and great reviews!

For out-of-towners, you have to factor in the cost of plane tickets and hotel rooms. And it's not like most people can visit New York City all the time.

But you make me feel less Broadway-obsessed. It's taken me two years to see 7 shows, and I probably won't travel to New York next year.. (The first night, counting travel from the West Coast, never seems to work out. And my wife, quite sensibly, doesn't want to see two shows in a day.)
