OK - I know little about the show, the music, etc. So curiosity got to me to watch this video.
Not to be mean, but could there have been a more boring song or video? I kept waiting for the melody to go somewhere - anywhere. Definitely did nothing to encourage me to see it. Just a colossal waste of time
I guess I can understand how, out of context, the song may feel this way. I have to agree that within the show it's one of the more powerful numbers. I saw the show in November and it's one of the songs I can still picture in my head and still remember as if I were there.
If you're watching the show, it's quite moving and I do like the song. Just watching this video out of context, I agree that it feels kinda dull, and her voice grates my nerves a bit.........so that doesn't help.
I absolutely love Brittain Ashford's voice and Sonya Alone exemplifies what is a uniquely beautiful instrument. It's haunting and intensely felt in the context of the show.
I agree. It's a truly eclectic score. Contrast "No One else" and this number with, say "Letters" and "The Duel," which takes the roof off the Imperial. It keeps surprising us, and the fact that the score mixes more traditional ballads with a downtown vibe is part of its bag of (wonderful) tricks. By the end, the entire piece becomes intimate, romantic, ruminative. It pulls us closer, and we lean forward in the final moments. Quite a ride, this one.

Back when I saw this on off-bway, this was the only song that I truly remembered and enjoyed. In context, it's quite powerful. Taken out of context, I can also see how it can be boring.
Yeah, this was one of the ones that really stuck with me after first seeing the show off-Broadway, I so love Brittain's performance. On my most recent visit to the Imperial, I was a little nervous about hearing it performed by someone else for the first time (her understudy, Ashley Perez Flanagan was on that night), but she absolutely killed it as well. It's such a beautiful song.
This was actually the first song that I heard from the score a couple of years ago and it peaked my interest in the whole show. Brittain Ashford has an incredibly unique and powerful voice that is filled with raw emotion. She actually gave one of my favorite performances of the season.

I've said this before, but if I was calling the shots for Comet, the song I'd be putting out there is "Charming". It's the only number I could effectively recall after the show.

I thought it was brilliant. Did it have the big moment that you were kind of expecting? No, but that doesn't make it dull. I happen to love music that takes you in a little bit of a different direction than you were expecting, or have heard a thousand times before. I thought it was a beautiful song that I am eagerly looking forward to hearing live.
The first time I saw GREAT COMET in the tent downtown, this was what I call a "time stands still" moment. It seemed as if everything else in the world had either stopped or fallen away entirely for the three minutes Brittain gave us the gift of her performance of this song. I hope she's nominated.

I appreciate what you're all saying - and perhaps that's it - you have to be familiar with the show, the context for it to be effective. But if that was designed to encourage to promote the show, I think it missed the mark
Trust me...I saw the show, it's painfully bad. That is probably the best song in it...imagine how bad the rest is.

I totally understand, as a fan of the show, where you're coming from. Personally, this is the song I've used to get many of my friends into the show, as a lot of it is very modern and they appreciate old-school ballads. But some other selections from the show that might match your tastes include:
Also, muscle23ftl is a troll who just goes around to any thread involving Comet and trashes it... Tbh, I just don't understand where all his hatred comes from!

Didn't you leave before act 2, where that song is
You are correct! But I have heard all the songs before l saw the show, hoping that'd help me enjoy the show even more, and I thought that was the best one, but it was so painful I left without caring about missing the best of the worst. I love that you know that! Haha

muscle23ftl, just curious-- if you disliked this show, why do you waste your time posting on every thread you can that you hate it?
And, more specifically, why do you hate it with such a passion? Even though I happen to love it, I understand those who dislike it, or even those who just don't get it, but I've never come across someone who just hates something and then tries to ruin it for other people.

Please, for years he has been posting with pride about how much of a ditz he is. Anything with substance he hates. He feels entitled for all shows to be tailored to superficial gay men with half a brain cell left. No reason to argue with him.

Ha! I guess I feel like I'm talking with a friend since it's chernjam's thread, but I like to say what I think, if I spent money and time seeing something that I found so terrible, I almost felt insulted, I will say it. I'm just me! Comet was the worst that I've seen this season. Groundhog and Bronx Tale are the follow ups. Sometimes when I get a comp, I will be a bit more respectful and won't voice my opinion on the internet.

You said that you listened to the cast album before you saw the show. If you didn't like the score before you even saw it, it's your fault for buying a ticket. Yes, you've made it clear that Boulevard is the only good show running on Broadway. Shoo shoo troll.

You're right, I shouldn't have, but people like you kept telling me it makes sense "in context"---well, 2 of my friends did, and we are still on speaking terms by the way. We can disagree and still keep it classy, troll! I said Sunset is the best show on B'way, I enjoyed SOR, OYF, CFA, WP, and a few more...don't put incorrect words in my mouth :)
