If United States goes down, United States Theatre goes with it

The danger to theatre and every other form of expression is that the President-elect does not understand the First Amendment. During one debate, he said that something about trying to change libel laws so it would be easier to sue the press.

Let's be rational. Let the man have some time in office before we start passing judgement on his policies and their effects on the country

Yeah, we should at least and wait and hear what his policies are before judging him...

He didn't detail most of his plans before the election?! You'd have to be a crazy person to show your hand like that!

"Let the man have some time in office"...how on earth can you expect anyone to be rational when saying uttering those words?  Rationality no longer exists and the expectation of it is ludicrous.

Why am I thinking of that song, "Intermission Talk," from Me and Juliet, because of this thread? Hmmm...

It's SO pathetic how you are all so crazy about this and making absolutely ridiculous and baseless claims.

Its safe to say that like most people on here I am heartbroken about the result and yes scared to what might happen to the Broadway industry after this goof takes the oval office.

This is sarcasm, right? I  hope?

And yeah, it might not be the end of theatre but theatre and the arts in general are going to suffer, not just with the threat of censorship but just because of plain budget cuts. Republicans love to cut arts funding right off the bat.

America as a country and the American theatre has survived a Civil War, two world wars, the Great Depression, major civil rights upheavals, the Vietnam War, and a major terrorist attack. Both will survive Donald Trump.

Diving into the deep end folk.  I absolutely agree that theater may see some funding/grant issues but I absolutely disagree that Trump will have the authority to kill US Theatre.  Even if he were to try (and I don't believe he will), that will just spur the arts community to push back with everything it has.  That's when some of the real creativity happens.

He might hinder tourism coming in from other countries - at least initially.  i don't know how much Broadway relies on out of country tourists, but possibly that could come into play for the next little while?  Not deterring me though - I'll be in NYC on Sunday and looking forward to a week of shows!

Didn't the president-elect once try his hand at producing a play in New York?  Whatever one thinks of him, he's a lifelong New Yorker and part of the fabric of the city.  I doubt he will try to inhibit theater in any way.

I doubt that B'way has anything directly to fear from this administration.  What is has to fear is the economy.  If/when it falters, the arts feel it first.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Don't worry about the theater. The theater will be fine.

Worry instead about healthcare.

Worry about Trump scuttling the Iran deal.

Worry about Trump repealing the estate tax and reducing taxes on the rich?

Worry about Trump increasing the deficit.

Worry about Trump deporting 11 million people.

Worry about Trump build that F*CKing wall.

Worry about him "draining the swamp"--whatever you THINK he means by that.

Worry about him reducing benefits for vets.

Worry about him being clueless as to how to grow the economy and bring back those jobs he sent to China.

Worry about him trying to renegotiate NAFTA and TPP. Worry about making good on his promise to punish Ford and Nabisco. Worry about his vow to make good to his angry mobs clamoring for Hillary to be thrown in jail.

Worry about him imposing that complete ban on Muslim immigration.

Worry about him kicking out Syrian refugees.

Worry about him killing the families of terrorists?

Worry about him bringing back waterboarding, with no legal curbs?

Worry about that--and more--but don't worry about the theater. The theater will survive.

Theatre (and art) is at its best when it has something to react against. We may well get more penetrating and less facile theatre. The greatest painting of the 20th Century was in reaction to fascism.

Well said, PJ. In times of struggle--regardless of the struggle--art is a release. It is constant. My faith in my fellow Americans has been shaken, but my faith in the arts is stronger then ever.
