Interesting piece in the New York Times on how people used to sneak into theatres for the second half of plays, but don't tend to now. I don't think this was as common in the UK - what's your experience? http://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/25/nyregion/a-lost-art-on-broadway-sneaking-in-for-act-2.html?_r=0

While I have never done this or even heard of it before, I am familiar with seat switching at the interval.

I did it once during a particularly empty performance of Evita. Went from back row to second. All terribly unethical.

I've switched seats in the interval too. You may as well if there's a better seat empty.

Can't remember doing this is London (though i'm sure it woud be very easy) but snuck into Act 2 of Beauty and the Beast in Melbourne a number of times while I was backpacking there after seeing the full show.   Can say that I've seen Hugh Jackman's Gaston quite a few times because of it (though not the performance where he wet himself). And worked out the Beast's transformation.

We DID used to interval upgrade at Les Mis back when it was at The Palace though as the £5.50/8.50 Upper Circle seats gave you a great view of any empty places in 2/3 of the stalls. Good luck trying that in Harry Potter though..
