Heading back to London and hoping to see three shows over the weekend in mid November.
I'll try to get into Harry Potter (thanks to any advice on when to go to the Box Office, and what to expect).
Am interested in any type of theatre -- and would appreciate any recommendations, and whether we should try to buy tickets in advance or when we arrive.
Am not likely to want to see anything that has been on Broadway, but OK with seeing anything that might be heading there. (Frankly, War Horse and Matilda were much better in London, IMO).
Greatly appreciate your thoughts and patience -- I'm sure you get this question just about every day.
There's loads on! No Man's Land with McKellen and Stewart is superb (though a typically elliptical Pinter), and there are a few things opening at the National Theatre that might be worth checking out - Amadeus, David Hare's thriller The Red Barn, new musical A Pacifist's Guide to the War on Cancer, Peter Pan. Half A Sixpence is coming to the West End, Sunny Afternoon is good, Ed Harris stars in Buried Child at Trafalgar Studios, and I agree Lazarus is great.
Would recommend seeing The Comedy About a Bank Robbery at the Criterion - a five-star show from the excellent Mischief Theatre Company - pure British farce. If you fancy traditional musicals, the Chichester transfer of Half a Sixpence at the Noel Coward Theatre gives some great performances.
I would recommended booking in advance as far as you can, as no booking fees and discounts usually apply earlier. However if you wait, you can decide which shows you want to see on the day and get heavily discounted tickets at the Leicester Square TKTS booth or try day-seating!
I'm going in November and got front row for Lazarus (£15), front row for The Last Five Years (£10) and a great seat for Side Show at the Southwark. Theatre on a budget!
