i saw The Color Purple a few weeks ago from the first row of the rear mezzanine, and the view was fine. My daughter will be home from school in a few weeks, and I want to take her to see it, but I'd like to be a wee bit closer. The only show we can attend is a Thursday, and we wouldn't be able to be in the theater district until about five o'clock. For this reason, I will probably buy the tickets ahead of time, unless people here can convince me that I could get a good seat at the box office at that time.

So, here's the problem. Should I get full price tickets in the fourth row center orchestra for $300, or would right orchestra row four at $200 with a TheaterMania discount be a better choice to save  $100? I can also get row O center orchestra for $200, but that's sixteen rows back. I'm a little afraid of relying on the box office or TKTS unless it's a fairly sure bet. My daughter won't be back again until December. I have no idea how long Cynthia Erivo will be with the show, and she's the reason I want my Dd to see the show.

Also, is it better to call the box office than to buy online for better seat selection? I never buy tickets ahead of time. We just generally go with the flow of lotteries, rush, etc

So what would you do to get the most bang for your buck?

No need to pay $300. Go with either of the other orchestra choices, and buy in advance since you're nervous. If there is an applicable discount, definitely use it. I don't think if you call you will get different options than online.

We sat right orch row 4 and it was amazing!  I don't think we missed anything by being on the side. If you want to see Cynthia up close then centre orch is what you want. You've seen it though so you must be familiar with how its staged.  I would sit up close rather than further back.  There's a lot of eye/hand contact with the actors up front!

Color Purple/Seating Choice
My friend gets an employee discount via a hospital which is equivalent to the Theatermania discount code.  We let her get the tickets for a group of us and were in row O center.  I personally wasn't thrilled because I usually get myself a closer side orchestra seat with a discount for the shows I see for the same price this row O was.

The show was fabulous and wanted to see it again.  I told me sister to go as well so we got Theatermania discount row F seats 5 & 7 which were wonderful!  You could see their facial expressions and tears.  Please don't buy row O!

I posted another answer on another thread and included a picture of the first few rows vs distance of the stage.

I"m going back to see TCP again so I can see Heather before she leaves.  I previously sat in row C.  This time I have a choice of front row or row D.  It would be great to be up close and personal in the front row, but is TOO close?

Thanks in advance

We sat front row center and really enjoyed it. I would choose front row again.

You are very "visible" because the actors are so close and the lighting illuminates the first row. The actors and audience members will see you and there will be eye contact (and hand shaking in opening number for five or so people sitting center). So, if that makes you uncomfortable, I wouldn't do it. But for me, to be five feet from all that talent was incredible

I tend like to be close (I never choose mezz) so you should factor that in to my opinion.

Since this thread popped up again, and I'm the OP, it reminded me that I should thank MyFavoriteBrunette. Those pictures helped immensely, and we ended up 5th row center. Thank you for helping make the decision so easy.  We saw the show Thursday night, and beforehand I told my daughter she would end up crying. She swore she wouldn't, but of course she did. Mom' s always right!

Oh wow!  I'm SOOOOO glad the pics helped you decide where to sit.  I feel awfully guilty taking photos during bows but if it can help in instances like this, then it's worth it.  Oh yes!  The water works were on for me, too!
