No. This is not for Lincoln Center. I wrote here last year after speaking to Lin about this. He wants this filmed and accessible to people. It's been the plan since the beginning. It's not going to be released for a LONG time, but it's being filmed and will eventually be put out, whatever way he decides to do it.

You're right it is being filmed twice but article didn't state the reason why. I hope it's for a DVD release or something for the public to buy; not for media/advertisement purposes for its shows in Chicago and the tour.

They already HAVE footage for commercials. They have for quite a while.

Yeah, let's spend all that money to film the show twice. Why? I dunno. Just cuz. What will we do with it? Good question, hadn't even thought of that.

I spoke with some at Lincoln Center who said that they had tried several times to get their cameras into the Richard Rodgers, only to have the producers cancel each time. This person also said the producers had plans of their own, which is now evident given recent news.

It also stands to reason that if the show is being filmed professionally, there's no need for Lincoln Center to spend the money to film it. Especially since that video wouldn't be available until after HAMILTON closes, anyways.

Since Lin's tweet was "We're filming the original cast before I go. WE GOT YOU.", that doesn't seem to lend itself to anything else but an eventual public release. Hard to reframe that as "We're recording a new promotional reel... WE GOT YOU."

It's standard practice to film a show twice for one final filmed product. That way if something isn't quite right in one performance, they can edit in from the second performance. It doesn't in any way mean it's being filmed for two separate reasons.

the mention of filming backstage cameos supports my idea that this will be used to make the inevitable documentary about the show. a la Broadway Idiot, which has a considerable amount of show excerpts in it.

They do this for concerts, too. I have several concert DVDs and they're all recorded over two performances. As has been said, that way the editors have two performances to choose from and can select the best performance for each number. It seems to suggest that they'll be filming the show with an audience.

Shows with professional releases sometimes film twice to get the best coverage/takes possible. That's how Passing Strange and Company did it.

There's definitely a documentary already in progress. There may be more than one.
That said...I wish they would not have waited so long to do this. I understand that things fall through but Leslie's voice is nowhere near the shape it was in last summer.

Shrek The Musical was filmed in 2009, and was finally released in 2013. It was over four years. And that was SHREK.
If I had to guess, this won't be released until 2025 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the show debuting on Broadway.

I definitely think Groff will come back. It's not the OBC without him.
So the two shows will film with audiences most likely? How do they determine which shows will get filmed? Wonder if they just film the matinee and evening show on a Saturday with Lin going on for both performances.
