Hi, I'm trying t find some information on Liza Minnelli and her interest in the musical Gypsy. I'm sure I read as youngster somewhere that she had no real passion to be an actual performer until her Birthday when Judy took her to broadway to watch Gypsy and the show changed her life. Is this correct? any further information would be greatly appreciated.

I'm now very interested to hear more about this! Does anyone have more insight?

I've seen articles that mention Liza being in awe of Merman in GYPSY, but that it was seeing BYE, BYE BIRDIE in 1960 that convinced the 13 year old Minnelli that that's what she wanted to do...sing and dance onstage. She's mentioned that often in interviews.

If I'm not mistaken, weren't Liza and Judy briefly considered for the first film of Gypsy?

I heard it was Judy (yes!) and Ann-Margret (NO!). Jack Warner refused to work with Judy again.
