So I just found out about this service called MoviePass and signed up for their 2 week free trial. Does anyone use this?  I would like to know what you think.  It's $40 a month ($30 outside of NYC) for "unlimited" movies at pretty much every theater.   I put unlimited in quotations because it seems once you see a movie, you have to wait a full 24 hours to buy a ticket for the next one, is that correct?

I've been using MoviePass for over a year and love it. Absolutely worth if you go to the movies with an regularity.

The 24 hr countdown clock is annoying, but there are ways to get around it. You can only see each movie once, but there's nothing stopping you from checking into a different film and buying a ticket to whichever movie you like.

Overall it's an outstanding service and they've lost hundreds of dollars having me as a member. :)

I looked into it a while back but it didn't seem worth it, especially since only the bigger theater chains honor it (basically Regal, AMC, and Cinemark, and I hate Regal and AMC). But thanks for the heads up on the free trial (which they didn't have before). I've signed up, so we'll see how this goes.

IFC center, Angelika, Bow Tie (the old Chelsea Clearview) and all the Lincoln Center theaters take it too. It's not just AMC and Regal.

Ah, you're right, I'm finding other theaters near me that accept it, even arthouse theaters. This may be worth it after all.

MoviePass used to use Discover, but a few months ago they switched to MasterCard so you can use it basically anywhere that accepts MC. Film Forum is still cash only and I believe is the only place I've wanted to see a movie and not been able to use it.

You still can't use it at the Lincoln Plaza theatre, which sucks.

Ah, that explains it. I wish I'd known about this change earlier.

I had it for a year and it's amazing if you enjoy going to a bunch of movies a month to get your moneys worth. I probably saw close to 75 movies for the year I had it. Personally though I really burnt myself out seeing that many movies in a year and I decided to not renew it in September 2014. A big factor for me was the 20 mins worth of trailers that my local movie theater shows plus the fact that I was going 30 mins round trip to the only movie theater I like near me.  I just felt like I was really wasting a lot of time.

I have only seen like 6 movies since I didn't renew. The main thing I enjoyed about movie pass was that I was going to see movies I normally wouldn't have gone to see in the theater and I ended up enjoying a lot of movies that I didn't expect to.

Honestly as long as you think you are definitely going to go a lot then it is totally worth the money.

I have 4 movie theaters within walking distance so I think I will definitely get my moneys worth out of it.  I was hoping to do it for one month plus the two weeks free and see all the Oscar films, but there is a pricey cancelation fee.  So once you go past the 2 week free trial if you don't cancel you're signing up for a year.  I hope this doesn't cut into my theater going.

I see almost all movies. I haven't done the math, but I'm sure I saved hundreds of dollars because of MoviePass.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Unless you're going to the movies two or three times a day, every day, no, you don't.

Thanks for all your input. I'll definitely try it out for a year. Once you've been a member, does your monthly fee lock or does it raise every so often?

I highly recommend this service! For $41 a month, I have seen so many films I wouldn't see otherwise.  I live in NYC so it's cheaper if you live elsewhere and I get to support independent theaters.

I'm mostly happy with it, too. And it's only $35 for me. The things I don't like about it are the mandatory 24-hour wait in between movies (as opposed to simply the next calendar day), and the fact that a few theaters I used to frequent (including the one closest to my house, which was always my go-to theater) do not accept it. But the advantages definitely outweigh the disadvantages.

I still haven't figured out how they make money on this. Are there really enough people not getting their money's worth every month to offset the ones who are going all the time? Or is there some other way they're making a profit from this?

I think they probably have some sort of contracts with the bigger movie chains and bigger film studios so that it becomes profitable for them.  The biggest complaint people have is the 24 hour rule but I've made it work. I haven't found a theater in NYC that doesn't accept it.
