From what information we've been given so far about Groundhog Day, this is apples and oranges. I like Matilda and Tim Minchin quite a bit, but it's material that is very different from Hamilton.
I have to agree with what other posters have said before--I don't think there's a need to compare every show and make things a contest. I think Hamilton is outstanding. I also feel that way about SITPWG and ACL. But I don't think I can, or moreover, need to compare them. They're such different beasts. What makes them enjoyable and special to me is the unique emotions and reactions they cause for me.
I can understanding comparing shows in the same season when they are literally competing for Tony Awards and (sometimes) audience. But this seems like an odd comparison given they are opening like 2 years apart?
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
