The Volunteer Theatre Actors' Association (VTAA) is a non-profit organization developed with community theaters in New York to support community theater actors and staff. Our website is
www.volunteertheatre.org We aim to be like Actors' Equity but for community theater actors.
Benefits to actors include discounts with established companies to offset the costs of auditions, invitations to participate in webinars and exclusive events, access to advocacy services, as well as the opportunity to receive mini-grants to fund continuing arts education. Most importantly, the VTAA provides a list of recommended well-being and safety guidelines for working with community theater actors. Theaters also benefit by receiving of in-kind donations, assistance with the promotion of upcoming shows and auditions, as well as the opportunity to receive mini-grants to cover production costs.
Lisa Bertrand, Founder of the VTAA, describes the organization as " being similar to "Actors Equity" but for community theater actors and staff and without the hefty dues. We aim to provide the same benefits to our members that Equity does for Broadway performers."
