Just realized that I went to NYC 2 weeks ago and was going to make a post about it but never did! This was my very first trip to NYC and it was so special. Since the memories are still fresh in my mind, I'll give the lowdown.
Thursday, 5/28: On the 20th Century This show was so wonderful. Kristin was on her game so hard and the audience was loving her. The supporting cast was awesome. Andy Karl was hilarious. Mary-Louise Wilson was also wonderful (although she forgot her lines a couple times). We sat too stage-right, but all in all it was terrific. After the show Kristin high-fived me when I reminded her of when she tweeted me a couple years ago (although later that night she tweeted a photo of her hand-sanitizing her gloves, which I took a little offensively...but she probably just didn't want to get sick).
Friday 5/29: Fun Home We were almost late due to that "Manhattanhenge" thing, which lead to thousands of people in the street taking pictures, but we made it and the show was fantastic. From the recording, I had previously wanted Judy Kuhn to win the Tony. But Sydney Lucas was so fantastic. Her performance of "Ring of Keys" moved me to tears. So great. The entire show was so thrilling, Michael Cerveris owned that Tony.
Saturday 5/30 matinee: The Visit Chita Rivera. What can be said about that amazing woman? I'm so glad I got to see this fantastic production. I've loved Chita since I was a child (thanks to my dad's original recording of West Side Story) and she was everything I ever wanted. Kander & Ebb's (maybe) last musical was so dark but so beautiful. The set was stunning. John Riddle, Tom Nelis, Jason Danieley and Mary Beth Peil were all terrific in their supporting roles.
Saturday 5/30 night: An American in Paris I was excited for this production. Unfortunately, I was left cold. The dancing was fantastic although much of it seemed extraneous (Fidgety Feet and the nonsensical ballet which had absolutely nothing to do with the story). The singing was mostly just decent, although I was dazzled by Max von Essen's dream sequence of Stairway to Paradise and thought Jill Paice sounded wonderful. Also, the Clintons were there! I talked to Hillary at intermission (it was the most exciting part of the evening for me).
Sunday 5/31: On the Town A magnificent production. The singing was wonderful; Alysha Umphress got huge applause after I Can Cook Too, I didn't know that Elizabeth Stanley could sing like that (although I mostly know her only from Company). Megan Fairchild is a sensation (I also had no clue that she is the same Fairchild family as Robert, from AAIP). Tony Yazbeck is to die for. This show is so wonderful, I don't know why it isn't a huge hit. Did I mention Jackie Hoffman? So good.
This trip was wonderful! The city is vibrant and alive and i can't wait to return.
"Contentment, it seems, simply happens. It appears accompanied by no bravos and no tears."
Sounds like a great trip! Your first trip and your first "true' Broadway show will be a memory you will keep forever. And, you have entered a small number of people that have been in the same room, much less talk to a POTUS and FLOTUS.
A group of 8th graders from my hometown in Oklahoma were also at AAIP that evening as well.
