The musical American Idiot by American skate punk band Green Day is coming to the Arts Theatre in London's West End in mid July until mid September. It has already done a short UK theatre tour 2 years ago. This is the first UK version of the show as the version that toured the UK last time was the American tour version.

Is this worth seeing as I do like some of the rock musicals that have popped up over the last few years.

If they are using the original staging and choreography, I would definitely go.  I saw the US tour three times and I wasn't even a Green Day fan.  I thought it was absolutely stunning and should have won the Tony for Best Musical and Choreography (at least it won for scenic and lighting designs).

Won't be using original staging and choreo, venue is much smaller. THe original was used on the UK tour that happened a year or so ago.

Best bet is to look at the creatives. From what I've seen of their work, I think this could be great.

Thanks for the info. I have taken your advice a booked a ticket for this show. I will be going by myself to the matinee show at the end of August. I could not find any one that wanted to go to this show with me. I am sure I will have a great time at the show.

You will love it the show is a powderkeg exploding of music, band, cast and direction firing at full throttle.

The Matinée crowd I went in with seemed quite chatting and while I had not seen green day or the show before there were several who happy chat about previous version of the show or Green Day concerts

As said the Cast really are giving it their all and all give star turns - really don't like to single ones out but Aaron Sidwell is quite stunning as Johnny both vocally and his full on physical performance  - Alexis Gerred again gives a very powerful vocal and presence - he would have made a strong Chris in Miss Saigon -  but there is not a weak link and they really get together to create the manic approach of the time and music.

Not seen any clips or versions of the previous show so don't know how much of the staging is fixed but director/choreographer Racky Plews is a name to watch as she has made a full on exciting production which feels fresh and vibrant and a great eye for ensemble dance routines

One warning is that if that August day is hot take water and a ice pack - the show is 90 mins no interval (and no latecomers admitted - yippee!) but I have never been so sweltering in a theatre after a hour in  - to the extent that the last 15 mins was spend trying not to keel over due to the heat /lights/sound  - which was a pity it did impair enjoyment of the show and am sure will be a issue when full and things get even hotter in August otherwise the theatre, the FOH staff  were great - hopefully the stalls were a little cooler

Also the cast use the same entrance and as the audience and popped up  quite quickly after the show and were happy to sign and have pics taken.

I have now seen the show twice. The Matinee show on Saturday 1st August and yesterday Saturday 29th August at the Matinee show. Wow what a great show the cast and band are great as is the show. The songs work really well in a musical. I think I will try and see it again before it closes in mid November.
