Hi folks. I'll be in London for about a week in mid-June and am completely overwhelmed trying to decide what to see. The new debbie tucker greene play and Gypsy with Staunton are the only two  choices so far that I feel confident about. Can anyone make some recommendations--what is just essential viewing, what's skippable... I'm looking to do a broad range. A big musical or two, a major play, some comedy, some really offbeat theatre. And, of course, anything that hasn't already made it to New York.

Any recommendations are wildly appreciated.

I really enjoyed Bend it like Beckham last week when I saw it, if you want a big new musical with lots of heart then I'd go with this. Some great tunes and all in all just a fun night at the theatre.

Thanks, Mark! I wondered about that one. I do love the movie--which actually was why I was concerned about choosing it. Happy to hear a good word for it.

The Play That Goes Wrong would seem to fit your criteria.

If you like The Kinks, then Sunny Afternoon.

And, while it's been longplaying and somewhat touristy - I've really enjoyed The Woman in Black.

And, the essential website is theatremonkey.com for seating and ticket information.

I can't speak with any knowledge or confidence about these new productions:

The tiny Union Theatre is premiering a new musical: Duncton Wood of which I know nothing.

Southwark Playhouse also is premiering a new musical: Teddy - which sounds intriguing.

The Donmar is premiering a new play: Temple - which is about Occupy London.

Everyman at The National (although there is a cinebroadcast coming in July)

The Globe has King John and As You Like It.

I would not recommend The Commitments - but it's there.

Bit of a shameless plug, but if you're keen on new musicals, I'm working on FACING EAST, a new musical that's doing a concert on the West End in June to support Stonewall and Pride in London. :)

Thank you, ggersten!

And I'm afraid I'll be back in NY by then, tourboi, but good luck!
