For her final show as Gigi, Rachelle Ann Go let it riff - even more than in the Anniversary Gala.  The phrase starts at about 1:05.  She's going to be Fantine in Les Mis next in London.

Sounds dreadful. Sing the score.

Relax.  This was her second last performance and she was apparently given permission.

Whatever happened to singing as it was written.  This is not Wicked after all.

Permission or not--it's still screaming [to my ears].

During our last matinee we always did 'something' for our own[cast] amusement, but never altered what was musically written.

I have to say I agree. Sing the show as its written but find something within the show which can provide amusement to you as a company. In all the shows I have done, I have only ever been able to do it twice, once during scarlet pimpernel and the other during phantom and even then if you are not careful it can be notice. permission or not, it did not sound ok.

Still not as bad as what Hugh Maynard does with the character of John, especially his performance of Bui Doi.  A self-indulgent mess.

Since when was "The Movie In My Mind" a song that really warranted riffing? I love a good riff, when appropriate, and she obviously has a set of pipes on her, but this is nuts.

Is this kind of thing becoming the musical theatre equivalent of prog rock

This is not the best audio.  Rachelle's page has a link with better audio (sorry not very tech savvy to post the link here) I think it is quite beautiful and special since it is not a daily occurrence!

I didn't mind the second riff but the first was terrible. She'll make a great Fantine though.
