I thought his Richard III was extraordinary. All the attention seemed to go to Twelfth Night (which was also wonderful) but I was really blown away by Richard III.
I have to go with Boeing Boeing. It was my introduction to his comedy chops and I just had the best time ever. But man his Olivia really was spectacular.
BTW did you know he's going to play The BFG?? I had no idea!
I think I would have to agree with perfectlymarvelous and go with Richard III, although it's certainly not an easy decision. I was lucky enough to see Richard III and Twelfth Night on the same day, and just the physical differences between his Richard and Olivia were astonishing; it seemed like he grew five inches between the two shows.
That also made me realize that in the four New York shows I've seen him do (I missed La Bete), he seems to have had four different body types. I've never seen another performer who was so physically different from one role to another.
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

I think his brilliance as an actor is not because of any single role, but rather that every role he plays is done perfectly. I'd be hard pressed to say any of them was a better performance than any of the others I've seen -- only five of them, so far.
I've only seen him in Boeing and Jerusalem, but even with only two, I'd be hard pressed to decide.
Edited because I was possessed when I originally typed 12th Night - I didn't get to see that one.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
Such a hard decision! It's between Jerusalem and Richard III for me. I agree with what was said earlier, Twelfth Night overshadowed Richard III, but the latter had a slightly bigger impact for me.
I'm looking forward to what he does on the big screen in his upcoming Spielberg collaborations, including the BFG. Is anyone else watching Wolf Hall, the BBC miniseries? A great, subtle performance he is giving there and he has a terrific supporting cast.
I've been fortunate enough to see him in all five roles, but if hard pressed to choose, I'd say the bombastic Rooster in JERUSALEM and his magnificent Olivia in TWELFTH NIGHT ("Malvoli--oh!!!"). Pure perfection.
