What do you guys think this year's musical will be? Or wish to be?
I can see: Mamma Mia (literally one set piece/movie) Rock of Ages (one set/movie) Spring Awakening (this can be BIG) West Side Story (best score ever) Gypsy (why not? Barbra Streisand?) Miss Saigon (they did Les Miz before)
I'd love to see Into the Woods - several of the movie cast members have said they'd like to do the actual show. This would be a great way to stage that. Add William H. Macy as the Mystery Man and you've got it.
"I never had theatre producers run after me. Some people want to make more Broadway shows out of movies. But Elliot and I aren't going to do Batman: The Musical." - Julie Taymor 1999
Frankly I wouldn't mind if there was a moratorium on Into The Woods for the next 5 years. Oy, enough with that show already!
I'd love to see something like THE SECRET GARDEN or ONCE ON THIS ISLAND. Something that hasn't just had a recent Broadway revival (these shows haven't been seen on Broadway since their premieres). Something with a gorgeous score that justifies the 50-piece orchestra the Bowl has at its disposal.
Of course, neither of these has any pop-cache, so I'm spinning pipe dreams, I know.
I miss the days when it was a "classic" musical vs. the recently or still running broadway shows. I think the change happened when Mauceri left. (Please come back John we miss you).
Totally agree about nostalgia for classic musicals at the Bowl, though I don't share your nostalgia for John Mauceri, who had a terrific speaking style when introducing a piece of music, but had a depressingly square, plodding take on the actual music-making itself for our money.
This year's summer musical will be Spamalot. I don't know how I feel about it. I've never seen the show live in person, but I do have the cast recording. I don't like the music, just the diva's song. Either way, I'm still excited to see a musical at the bowl. It's such a great experience seeing a show outside. July 31st-August 2nd.
I think the Bowl should do these shows with just musical highlights (unless of course it is a through-sung show). The drama of book scenes tend to be lost in that vast space, especially older shows like GUYS & DOLLS of a few seasons back.
you can see the whole show on youtube. It looks so stupid. I have no idea how it won best musical. When I'm out there in the cold night I want to gear a great score at least.. not happening this year, i guess.
Spamalot is the kind of show they'll have no trouble attracting celebrities to- a lot of physical comedy and other than the Lady of the Lake, none of the roles are particularly challenging to sing. Updated On: 2/10/15 at 10:43 PM
The show is so silly and fun. Probably my favorite show of the 2000's. I played Lancelot and all of his roles in my high schools production last year. The show is just a really fun time.
I'm surprised by the amount of hate for this show, although it seems the disdain is coming from people who have not seen the show.
I think it's a perfect choice for the Bowl. It provides several roles for celebrities to shine in. It's hilarious. And the music is fun.
Billy Crystal or Steve Martin or Patrick Stewart as King Arthur? Kristen Wiig as Lady of the Lake? Neil Patrick Harris as Lancelot? Mandy Patinkin as Sir Robin? Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Not Dead Fred/Minstrel/Prince Herbert?
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I wonder if Sara Ramirez's Grey's schedule would allow her to reprise her role...
