Hi i'm looking for musicals that maybe never got passed the readings or were just unproduced that have good scores. Mainly, i'm looking for some new audition material. If anyone can give me some shows that would be great.

1. Those kind of readings and unproduced shows often don't have many opportunities for the public to see them. They are usually (but not always) for industry peeps.

2. Those kind of reading and unproduced shows don't often publish their music -- who would know it to want to purchase.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

If it's mainly the obscurity factor you're looking for, you might want to try a score that was produced, but didn't receive a cast album. There are some great ones out there that hardly anyone knows.

I don't really know what kinds of songs you're looking for to give you any suggestions.

I personally think "All About Us" falls under this category. It was the Kander and Ebb musical based on "The Skin of Our Teeth" by Thornton Wilder. It was also called "Over and Over" in earlier versions. I've heard various demos and bootlegs of this score and it has a fun and sometimes beautiful score.

So can you recommend then shows that were produced ? For auditions i like to use songs like Take to the world from Evening Primrose. Underused but good.

If you want some more "unknown" musical theatre tunes, your best bet may be to try and check out some musical theatre composers albums. They're almost always a collection of songs from their usually yet to be produced musicals. Scott Alan, Joey Contreras, Drew Gasparini, Jonathan Reid Gealt, Michael Mott, Alexander Sage Oyen and Kerrigan-Lowdermilk are a few that instantly come to mind.

Try Sundown with a score by Peter LInk. I know the studio cast recording is available on Amazon and elsewhere. It features Judy McLane and Steve Blanchard. Hasn't made it to NYC yet, but I believe there were a few regional productions

The "other" Phantom musical (called, simply, "Phantom"), by Maury Yeston and Arthur Kopit, has some beautiful stuff. It has been produced, but not on Broadway or in the West End, because you-know-who succeeded with financing first. There is a cast album available.

Audrey, the Phantom Phanatic, who nonetheless would rather be Jean Valjean, who knew how to make lemonade out of lemons.

I just listened to a great CD I got from my local public library of a show that may fit what you're looking for: "Miss Spectacular," music and lyrics by Jerry Herman. It's listed as a "concept album." Recorded in late 1999. Delightful!

The Alan Menken/Stephen Schwartz musical The Hunchback of Notre-Dame immediately comes to mind. Great score.

On a previous thread on this subject, somebody warned against picking songs that are TOO obscure. S/he asked, "Do you want the auditioners to listen to you or discuss among themselves, 'What is that song and what show does it come from?'"

This is related to a thread I wanted to make asking what shows have great-to-excellent scores but just don't work when actually produced or at least haven't had a production that worked or matched the level of the score at this point in time.
