Not sure people will be sending you illegal PDFs of something you can buy for $11 on Amazon...

I sure hope people aren't sending pdf files of scripts! I am a published playwright, not a Broadway playwright, but lots of companies are doing my play. Sending pdf files is a nightmare every playwright and composer is dealing with. Just don't do it please. The fact that you feel so bold as to ask for it and make a thread about it, is a little scary to me.

It's on Amazon for $6.22. Or is that $6.22 more than you wanted to spend to get your "early start"?

not to mention that MANY licensing companies will send you a director's script early for a nominal fee.

Okay, I am going to offer a more moderate view here and take the licensing houses to task.

Yes, a pdf file of the script would be far preferable and I don't think criticism needs to be made for that or the person told to go purchase the published libretto, which is most likely formatted differently and definitely will not line up on page count with the script as it will be received later, greatly complicated the process, not to mention that the published libretto would be difficult to really scribble your way through on the pages in any meaningful way.... and the director's script would most likely end up being photocopied anyhow to facility that and not worry about erasing pencil at a later date... In fact, most companies - large theatres included, photocopy the scripts to avoid that and the risk of associated costs on return.

How about instead of attacking the OP, we say that while sending out free PDFs is not the right choice, we can sympathize with the plight and take the bulk of licensing houses to task for not considering these things and making unnecessarily complicated for directors / creatives / threats when they could very, very simply make better use of their access to modern technology and ease the process and give greater flexibility in production time lines.

If Theatrical Rights Worldwide can manage to do this, why can't the larger houses adapt their business model? TRW allows you to instantly download a time limited and water stamped perusal script and score for a very nominal fee that you may print as many times as needed, or to purchase pdf and hard copies for production at a small fee that do not need to returned and ease the burden of fines on theatres where things are not erased perfectly and avoids the difficulty of theatres having to work with shabby, age worn materials...

Just an agreement with a different perspective.

( For those ready to make the argument that it is filly to do this when a published libretto is available, refer to my argument above and I would amend that to point out that Memphis has a commercially published libretto freely available and you can still download a perusal colt from TRW's site, but the company ALSO offered a free non time-stamped pdf of several of their Broadway titles - Memphis included, as well as Spamalot, Addams Family, Ghost and a Big Fish - to standing customers who received their 2015-2016 Catalogue. More houses should take this cue.) Updated On: 10/22/14 at 10:40 AM

But there's what's right and there's what right. Period. Regardless of whether other licensing companies are "behind the times" changes nothing about illegal actions.

Downplaying the actual issues, makes what the OP is asking more legit.

Because the OP is making a request, illegal or not, that rises from a very real need and concern that is not being addressed and addressing those concerns stems the tide, so to speak.
I am not telling anyone to send the OP a pdf.
And this is part of the problem. People want to take a stance, but no one wants to actually do anything. Why bother when you can grandstand?

People DID address him by telling him the "legit" way to get what he wants.

No, they did not. They told him how to get the published script. That is very different than what the OP asked for.
My response stated that what the OP is requesting should be made available by the licensing house and there is no reason why it is not.

Because they are a business, and they have a right to be paid for their services. Just because the OP WANTS it for free, doesn't mean he should get it.

And please tell me where I said otherwise ANYWHERE. I do not.
I said "made available". I never said "give away","take", "steal", or "trade".

They seem to offer a Stage Manager Script that keeps the formatting of the licensed librettos, as well as giving wide margins for notes, etc. No clue if you can download that way in advance, though, since everything on the site says you have to contact licensing for info. Do we know their licensing team doesn't accommodate requests like this?

Haterobics,
They do have a stage management script available, but those things are usually sent with the regular production materials. As with actors' vocal / libretto books, it is rented and you only receive it for a specific block of time broke your school is scheduled to open. Longer than that standard window and the fees climb. It is also not downloadable, it is a hard copy only.

Personally, I'd buy it and then scan it myself.
