Just had a call from my friend who went to see it in preview on Monday night and he pronounced it pretty much perfect, with only Kevin Wheatley struggling with an American accent letting it down. Apparently his accent is the Sunderland side of America. However, he says Imelda Staunton is brilliant and the young June exceptional. Can't wait for a transfer.
With those stellar reviews, Chichester branding, Imedia Staunton this will have no problem coming into the West End, I would expect the Haymarket to be perfect for this and is available.
An american visiting and the show is pretty much as amazing as the reviews say it is. I've seen the Patti, Bernadette, Betty Buckly and Tyne Daly versions and Imelda is the total package. No new ground broken with this rendition but she sounds amazing and acts the hell out of it. A bit over the top, but Mama Rose is larger than life and who doesn't want some scenery chewed...in a good way. You always understand exactly where this character is coming from. Herbie is gruff, sincere and a perfect match. Tulsa dances beautifully and Louise is great although Laura Benanti was the best I've seen.
The strip scenes are fun and she really changes charcter, but not the smoothest I've seen. All minor quibbles though.
Took the first ticket which opened up which was row d, on the side. Just four seats from the aisle and i could see 90% of the action. The side seats are lower priced because of the awkward sightlines. But if you can get a ticket, see it.
Just on my way back from see a cracking Gypsy in Chichester.
I have stood next to Imedia Staunton in a theatre foyer sometime before and I tell you, she is a 4ft something demure and retiring lady, however when she is on stage and that spotlight is firmly fixed on her, she turns into a 7ft 2" powerhouse.
Everything does turn up Roses and Imedia is the epitomises an English Rose, perhaps one of our finest.
Her performance does sound great. However the production looks dated and lazy. Has Chichester done any new musicals or plays, or is it more a showcase for classics?
They traditionally do two musical a year, these seem to be always revival of American classics, conversely the plays they do seem alway to be classic British.
I would love to see Chichester take on a classic British musical I know these are very limited, but something like Aspects of Love would be great or the Boyfriend would also be good.
I also be good if they did a couple of American classic plays, such as Of Mice and Men or The Glass Menagerie for example.
The sets were fine. I wouldn't use dated or lazy to describe them... just nothing groundbreaking, but they more than did the job. I think for the Mendes/Bernadette Peters revival they were trying for a more minimalistic approach (which Laurents really hated). In some ways, I think they were going for that here— A lot of the sets are on platforms and you get a corner of this or a section of that. But then, the "stage" numbers are full out using the whole space. A lot of the vaudeville sets are meant to look tacky because it reflects the cheap budgets Rose would have had.
That said, you were watching the performers and the sets provided the framework—which is exactly what they needed to do.
