I'm so glad that this behavior is no longer acceptable in this nation. Sadly, there are still some men who believe that they have a divine right to beat their wives or girlfriends. And sadder still, there are countless women who suffer domestic abuse silently.
The Baltimore Ravens had enough evidence to suspend Ray Rice months ago, but they decided they needed him to win games and decided to ignore the fact that he is a violent criminal. But then the video leaked and they had to cover their own ass.
However, it's bizarre that he was suspended from the NFL when Aaron Hernandez, who happens to be a serial killer, was not.
I think deciding that this means violence against women is no longer accepted in our culture because of this late decision is a bit of a stretch. You heard the early ESPN discussions… of the "what did she DO?" variety.

@FindingNamo,
The history of pro sports in this country is replete with accounts of serial abusers of women. In times past, the MSM would not have touched this with a ten foot pole out of allegiance to the bro code. That same code has often been synonymous with "you're either the alpha male or a beta b*tch". As recently as 15 years ago, that footage would not have seen the light of day.
I'm not qualified to speak to the issue of battered woman syndrome but I can't in good conscience make light of it either. By all appearances, the victim Janay Palmer's only fault is that she's not a celebrity like pop singer Rihanna which might explain the lack of apathy by some toward her plight.
I hope she gets out of that relationship alive. She's with someone who will likely strike back the moment he feels threatened in any manner. She's never going to come out on top in hand-to-hand combat regardless of who strikes first. This is why elderly women used to teach young girls in their families to avoid tickling a tiger's tail as a survival technique. And at 5' 8" in the NFL, I'm left to wonder just how much of a Napoleonic complex is at play here. The Sean Connery Method of Keeping a Lady in Line
I spent seven years working for a domestic violence agency. The only thing sadder than a woman who won't leave her abuser is the multitudes who think that a woman staying somehow justifies her abuse. As I saw again and again, women in abusive relationships are usually trapped pretty thoroughly. Saying she should have left is like saying that Michael Vick's dogs should have just run away.
The only person responsible for abuse is the abuser, He is the ONLY one who can stop it.
What he did was wrong, and he deserves everything he is getting. However, they were both abusive that night. Men shouldn't hit women. Women shouldn't hit men. No one should hit anybody. Ever.
Wow! Does her brain reside on another planet? Does she realize that he could have killed her with that one single blow?!! The woman has absolutely no pride, self-respect or dignity. She blames the media for taking away what "he worked his ass for all his life?" Talk about clueless. He did this to himself.
"However, they were both abusive that night." Domestic violence is about power and control. I can pretty much guarantee Janay has neither in this relationship. I can also pretty much guarantee this isn't this first time she's been hit.
