I'm going to London with my mum in October and we were looking at getting discounted theatre tickets on the day.
We used to use the ticket booth in Leicester Sq (around 12 years ago) is it still decent? I'm fine sitting wherever but my mum is terrified of heights and will only sit in the stalls. We're not too fussy about what to see but ideally a musical. Are any of the other ticket booths worth trying on the day (not queueing for day seats).

You don't need to wait until the day of show to get discounted tickets.
For example, you can try londontheatrebookings.com - they operate several discount booths - we frequented the one at Picadilly Circus outside Boots. They tell people their website has the same allotments as the booths. The people at the booths though are known to call theatres on the day of and sometimes get better rates or get extra tickets. So, in some ways, the booths are superior. Also, the allotment changes day to day.
You may wish to use theatremonkey.com as a central site as it which lists various ticket agencies with discounts and links.
You can also try lastminute.com (navigate to theatre and london) which also has discounted seats you can get ahead of time - but usually you won't know where the seat is.

Shows should be pretty available in October with the end of tourist season and school being in session. TKTS can still be good if you don't want to do day seats, but lately the allocation of tickets and discounts available seem to be less. I was surprised during my visit in May and actually got better prices at the box office in some cases. They do show what shows were/are available each day on their web site.

Generally musicals are more available earlier in the week with less availability or smaller discounts on weekends. I'd advise understanding what seats you would get as the stalls in the back of the largest theatres may not be the best experience. Check out theatremonkey.com as the poster above suggests for reviews of seats and seat charts as well as info on discounts. Enjoy
